P7M to PDF: what actually happens

It is not a conversion, it is an extraction

A .pdf.p7m file already contains the PDF, byte for byte, wrapped in the signature envelope. “Converting” it means removing the envelope: the PDF you download is identical to the one that was signed, with no quality loss and nothing recompressed.

Before handing it over we check that the PDF’s hash matches the signed one: if the file had been altered after signing, we tell you.

What if there is an XML invoice inside?

Italian e-invoices (.xml.p7m) contain an XML file, not a PDF. We show it as a readable invoice with lines, VAT and due dates; the “Print or save as PDF” button gives you a PDF from the browser’s print dialog. If the supplier attached a courtesy PDF, you find it among the attachments and download it directly.

On Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

The page works in any recent browser. On iPhone and iPad the downloaded PDF is in the Files app; if Safari opens it in a tab, tap “Share” and then “Save to Files”. On Android it goes to the Downloads folder.

If something goes wrong

  • “Damaged or incomplete file”: the download was usually cut short. Download the file again.
  • Odd file names (smime.p7m, files without an extension): we try anyway, because we recognise the content from its bytes, not its name.
  • Encrypted file: an encrypted .p7m opens only with the recipient’s private key; no website can do it for them.
  • Very large files: we open files up to 100 MB. On a phone, close other tabs first.

P7M to PDF: frequently asked questions

Is the extracted PDF the same as the original?

Yes, identical byte for byte: we take it out of the envelope without changing it, after checking its hash matches the signed one.

Can I convert several files at once?

One file at a time for now. Converting many files at once (for example a folder of invoices) is in preparation.

Can I go the other way, from PDF to P7M?

No: creating a .p7m means signing the document with your own digital signature, which only its holder can use with their provider’s software.

Is the file sent anywhere?

No. The extraction happens in your browser, on your device.
